Gels or creams are applied using fingertips or a tool, which makes resurfacing evenly nearly impossible for the average person. Uneven pressure and irregular application patterns cause crystals to settle and cluster in low-level areas of the skin, which can cause redness and abrasion in places leaving skin tender and discolored.

With traditional microdermabrasion creams and gels, free-flowing crystals can pile up behind, or in, skin imperfections, causing a “ramp” of crystals to form. This ramp redirects the shear caused by the moving crystals up and over the skin imperfection. The result is that in the very areas needing more abrasion less is actually achieved.
